How Much Does It Cost to Build an App in 2026? Real Ranges

How much it costs to build an app in 2026: web and mobile ranges by complexity and by who builds it, what drives price, and the running costs after launch.

Legacies is a software and web studio from Romania, founded by Horia Stan and Alexandru Talnaci, and "how much will my app cost?" is the first question almost every founder sends us. So here is the long, honest answer, with sources.

In 2026, a simple web app built by a small team usually costs between $3,000 and $25,000, while a mobile app with accounts, payments and a backend often lands between $10,000 and $50,000. Large, complex products still cost $100,000 and up. AI builders can get you a working prototype for under $100 a month, but they do not remove the cost of making it secure, reliable and maintainable.

Quick answer

App cost at a glance

These are market ranges, not quotes. Agency data comes from Clutch's app development pricing guide, updated in September 2026. The freelancer and studio ranges are our own estimate, based on Clutch's hourly rates and the hours similar projects take us.

Who builds itTypical build costTypical timelineBest for
You, with an AI app builderPlan fees, about $25 to $250 a monthDays to weeksPrototypes, internal tools, testing demand
FreelancerAbout $3,000 to $30,0001 to 4 monthsClear, small scope, one platform
Small senior studioAbout $3,000 to $50,0001 to 5 monthsMVPs and business apps that must hold up
Offshore development shopAbout $10,000 to $60,0003 to 9 monthsLarger scopes with strong in-house product management
Full-service agency$50,000 to $250,000+6 to 12+ monthsComplex products, big companies, many stakeholders

According to Clutch, app developers on its platform most often charge $25 to $49 an hour, the average project costs $90,780 and the average timeline is about 11 months. That average is pulled up by large builds. Do not use it as the price of a focused MVP.

Web app or mobile app: why the price differs

A web app runs in the browser. One codebase works on phones, tablets and laptops. That is usually the cheapest way to ship a real product.

A native mobile app means building for iOS and Android, passing app store review and keeping up with two platforms. Cross-platform tools like React Native help, but you still pay for store setup, device testing and release management.

App typeSimpleMediumComplex
Web app (browser)$3,000 to $10,000$10,000 to $40,000$40,000+
Mobile app (iOS and Android)$10,000 to $25,000$25,000 to $80,000$80,000+
Web app plus mobile apps$15,000 to $35,000$35,000 to $120,000$120,000+

These ranges are our estimate for a small or mid-sized team charging European rates. A US agency will sit higher. A solo offshore freelancer can sit lower.

Our advice: start with a web app unless your product truly needs the phone, like offline use, the camera or Bluetooth. Many founders spend their budget on two native apps before they know anyone wants the product.

What actually drives the cost

Price follows hours. Hours follow decisions. These are the decisions that move the number most.

Features and roles

Every feature is design, code, testing and edge cases. Logins, user roles, payments, notifications, file uploads, search, admin panels and reports each add real time. An app with one type of user is much cheaper than a marketplace with buyers, sellers and admins.

Integrations

Stripe, calendars, CRMs, accounting tools, maps and AI models all come with their own APIs, limits and failure modes. A clean integration takes days, not hours. A badly documented one can take weeks.

Design depth

A clean interface built on a solid component system is affordable. Custom illustrations, complex animations and many unique screens are not. Design is also where scope quietly grows, so lock the main flows early.

Security and data

Handling personal data, payments or health information means access rules, audit logs, backups and GDPR work. This is the part AI builders skip most often. We wrote about it in vibe coding security risks.

Who builds it and where

Clutch lists typical rates from under $25 an hour in India to $100 to $149 in Australia. Seniority matters more, though. A senior who ships in 200 hours beats a junior who needs 600.

How AI tools changed app prices in 2026

AI coding tools are now normal. In the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey, about four in five developers said they use AI tools, and almost half use them daily. We use AI coding agents in our own work every day, and we review everything they write.

Here is what that changed, and what it did not.

So a small team with AI tools can quote less than a traditional agency for the same scope. But be careful with any quote that sounds too cheap. Ask who reviews the code, who owns security and who fixes things after launch. If you want the full picture of how this works in practice, read how AI coding agents are changing small teams.

The running costs most quotes leave out

The build is a one-off. These costs come back. Prices are from official pages at the time of writing.

Two traps we see often. First, free tiers that stop being free: Supabase pauses free projects after a week of inactivity, and Vercel's Hobby plan is for non-commercial use only. Second, AI features with no usage cap. One busy week can cost more than a month of hosting.

A useful rule of thumb: plan for yearly maintenance of 15% to 20% of the build cost. Frameworks ship security patches that need applying quickly, as we explain in Next.js security patches are now a product maintenance task.

What we charge

We build web apps in Next.js, React and TypeScript with a fixed price after a short written chat about scope. Prices are in Romanian lei, with approximate euro amounts.

ServicePriceNotes
Web appFrom 3,499 lei (about EUR 665)Final price and timeline set in the quote
Landing pageFrom 1,499 lei (about EUR 285)7-10 days
Monthly maintenance499 lei a month (about EUR 95)Monitoring, updates, backups, small edits

Every project includes 30 days of support after delivery, and you own the code, hosting and domain. The details are on our services page, and you can see what we have shipped on our projects page.

How to get an accurate quote

The fastest way to a real number is a short written brief. It does not need to be long.

With that, any serious team can give you a fixed price. Our guide on how to choose a web design agency lists more red flags. If you are still at the idea stage, start with how to build an MVP in 2026.

When to do it yourself and when to bring in a team

Do it yourself with an AI builder when you are testing an idea, the app is internal or the stakes are low. You will learn fast and spend little. Our comparison of AI app builders vs hiring developers helps you see where that path ends.

Bring in a team when real users will trust the app with their data or money, when it needs to scale, or when your prototype keeps breaking in ways you cannot fix. That is the moment a senior review pays for itself. Send us your brief through the services page and we reply with a fixed price. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to build a simple app in 2026?

A simple web app with logins and a few core screens usually costs between $3,000 and $10,000 with a small team, and a simple mobile app for both iOS and Android usually costs $10,000 to $25,000. With an AI app builder you can build a basic version yourself for a monthly plan fee, but you take on the work of securing and maintaining it.

Why is app development so expensive?

Most of the cost is skilled labour, and every feature needs design, code, testing and handling of edge cases. Clutch reports typical app developer rates of $25 to $49 an hour on its platform and an average project timeline of about 11 months. Integrations, security and supporting two mobile platforms add the most hours.

Is it cheaper to build a web app or a mobile app?

A web app is usually cheaper, because one codebase runs on every device and there is no app store review. A native mobile app means building and testing for iOS and Android, plus store fees of $99 a year for Apple and $25 once for Google Play. Many founders launch a web app first and add mobile apps once the product is proven.

Can I build an app with AI for free?

You can build a prototype for free or close to it, since tools like Lovable and Bolt have free plans with daily limits. A real product usually needs a paid plan, a database, hosting, a custom domain and someone who checks security. Expect the free path to cover learning and validation, not a production launch.

How much does it cost to maintain an app per year?

A common rule of thumb is 15% to 20% of the build cost every year, covering hosting, security updates, bug fixes and small changes. On top of that come usage costs like database plans, AI API calls and store fees. At Legacies, monthly maintenance is 499 lei, about EUR 95.

How long does it take to build an app?

A focused MVP web app often takes four to twelve weeks with a small senior team, while larger mobile apps take several months. Clutch reports an average of about 11 months across the app projects reviewed on its platform, but that includes big, complex builds. A tight scope is the single best way to shorten the timeline.
