Legacies is an independent digital product brand based in Bucharest, Romania, founded by Horia Stan and Alexandru Tălnaci, that builds websites, landing pages and web apps for businesses worldwide. An AI website builder can produce a first draft in minutes. The harder question is whether that draft meets your business needs.
Short answer: an AI website builder is fine when you need an online business card fast and cheap, and few of your clients come from search. Hire a web designer or developer when your site has to bring in clients through Google and AI assistants, when you need to stand out from competitors using the same tools, or when you want to own your site outright. Over three years the price gap is smaller than most people think.
Quick answer
- AI website builder: about $3 to $40 a month at the time of writing, a live site in minutes, but generic copy, limited control and you can't move the site to another host.
- Web designer or small team: usually $1,000 to $10,000 one time for a 4-6 page site, plus small running costs, and you own it.
- SEO: AI builders get the basics right. They fall short on specific content, speed and structure, which is what ranking and AI citations depend on.
- Rule of thumb: if a new client is worth a few hundred dollars or more to you, a site that is built properly usually pays for itself.
What an AI website builder actually does
You describe your business in a sentence or two. The tool picks a layout, writes headlines and service descriptions, adds stock or AI images and publishes the site on its own hosting. You then edit it with a drag-and-drop editor or more prompts.
In 2026 almost every builder works this way. Wix lets you create a site from a single prompt on every plan, including Free. Hostinger has both a manual editor and an "agentic" mode that builds pages from prompts. Durable was AI-first from the start and adds a CRM and booking. Squarespace and Framer have AI tools that run on monthly credits.
What you get is a decent first draft. What you don't get is someone who asks what makes your business different, who your best clients are and what they search for before they call you. The AI can't know those things unless you tell it, and most people don't.
AI website builder prices in 2026
All prices below come from official pricing pages at the time of writing (October 2026). They change often and vary by country, so check before you buy.
| Builder | Entry plan for a real business site | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hostinger Website Builder | Premium | $2.49/month intro | Paid upfront for 48 months ($119.52), renews at $10.99/month |
| Framer | Basic | $10/month | AI features use credits, 1,000 a month on Basic |
| Wix | Light / Core | $17.77 / $29.77 a month | Yearly billing, prices vary by location |
| Squarespace | Basic / Core | EUR 12 / EUR 18 a month | Annual billing (EUR pricing page), AI credits limited on Basic |
| Durable | Launch | $22/month yearly, $25 monthly | Free plan only gives a durable.site subdomain |
Two things to watch. First, intro prices. Hostinger's plan more than quadruples on renewal, a pattern we also covered in our business website cost guide. Second, AI credits. The generation that looks free in the demo often runs on a monthly credit allowance, and heavy editing burns through it.
The real 3-year cost
Comparing $25 a month with a $2,000 invoice isn't fair. A website lives for years. Here is the same comparison over 36 months, using the prices above.
| Option | Year 1 | 3-year total | Can you move it elsewhere? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hostinger Premium (48-month term) | $119.52 upfront | About $120 (covers 4 years) | No, builder sites stay on Hostinger |
| Framer Basic | $120 | About $360 | No, it stays on Framer hosting |
| Wix Light | About $213 | About $640 | No |
| Squarespace Core | EUR 216 | About EUR 650 | No |
| Durable Launch | $264 | About $790 | No |
| Wix Core | About $357 | About $1,070 | No |
| Custom site from a small team | $1,000 to $5,000+ build, plus domain and hosting | Build cost plus small yearly fees | Yes, the code is yours |
On cost alone, builders win. That's fair, and we won't pretend otherwise. The question is what the cheaper site costs you in clients you never hear from. We ran a longer version of this math in Wix vs WordPress vs a custom website.
Are AI website builders good for SEO?
They are fine for the basics and weak at the parts that decide rankings.
Google doesn't penalize a site because AI wrote it. Its guidance on AI-generated content says it rewards helpful, original content however it is produced. The problem is that AI builders produce the opposite by default: the same safe, general text that every other plumber, dentist or consultant using the same tool gets. Google has no reason to rank the 400th "trusted, professional, customer-focused" homepage above the others.
Where builders do well
- Mobile-friendly layouts out of the box.
- Free SSL, sitemaps and editable page titles and meta descriptions.
- AI help writing meta descriptions and image alt text. Hostinger and others do this automatically.
Where they fall short
- Generic content. No real prices, no named services, no local details, no answers to the questions your clients ask. This is what both Google and AI assistants look for.
- Speed. Builder pages often load far more code than a small site needs. Check yours with Google's PageSpeed Insights. Slow mobile scores cost you visitors before they read anything.
- Structure and schema. You get limited control over headings, structured data and internal linking. These matter more now that AI assistants read your site to decide who to recommend.
- Lock-in. On Wix, Squarespace, Framer and Durable your site lives on the platform. If you outgrow it, you rebuild.
AI search raises the bar further. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI answers cite pages that state clear facts: what you do, where, for whom and at what price. We explain how this works in how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT. A builder can host that content. It can't come up with it for you.
AI builder vs web designer: side by side
| AI website builder | Web designer or small team | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to launch | Minutes to a few days | Usually 2-4 weeks for a small site |
| Upfront cost | $0 to about $120 | About $1,000 to $10,000 |
| Monthly cost | About $3 to $40 | Domain, hosting, optional maintenance |
| Copy | Generic unless you rewrite it | Written around your business and clients |
| Design | Template look, shared with many sites | Built for your brand |
| Speed and technical SEO | Acceptable to weak, limited control | Fully controllable |
| Ownership | Platform owns the hosting and the code | You own the code, domain and accounts |
| Who fixes problems | You and a support chat | The team, during a defined support period |
Design ranges come from our own experience and from Clutch's pricing data, which we break down in the business website cost guide.
When an AI website builder is the right choice
We tell people to use a builder more often than you would expect. It makes sense when:
- You are testing a business idea and don't know yet if it will last.
- Clients find you through referrals, Instagram or a marketplace, and the site just confirms you exist.
- You need something live this week for an event, a launch or a grant application.
- Your total budget is a few hundred dollars and the money is better spent elsewhere.
If that is you, pick one, publish and get on with the business. Then rewrite the AI copy yourself with real details: your prices, your area, your process, the questions clients ask on the first call. That single step does more for SEO than switching tools.
When to hire a web designer or developer
Hire someone when the site has a job to do, not just a presence to show.
- Search brings you clients. If people Google your service or ask ChatGPT before they call, every ranking position matters.
- You compete on trust. Lawyers, clinics, B2B services and premium brands lose clients when their site looks like every other template.
- You need more than pages. Bookings tied to your own systems, client portals, calculators, multiple languages done properly or anything that's really a web app. For that side, read AI app builder vs hiring a developer.
- You want to own it. Your code, your domain, your hosting account, movable anytime.
This is the work we do. We build custom business websites in Next.js, without page builders, with copy and structure aimed at Google and AI search. A 4-6 page site starts at 2,199 lei (about EUR 430) and a landing page at 1,499 lei (about EUR 295), with a fixed price and delivery date in writing within 48 hours of a short first talk. If you already have a site that works but loads slowly or doesn't show up on Google, Web Optimization starts at 699 lei (about EUR 135). Full details are on our services page.
How to test an AI-built site before you commit
Give any builder a fair trial before you decide. It takes about an hour.
- Run PageSpeed Insights on mobileTest your published homepage. If performance is in the red, visitors on phones will feel it.
- Read your homepage as a strangerCould it belong to any competitor? If you could swap in another business name and nothing would feel wrong, rewrite it.
- Search for your business name and main serviceGive it a few weeks after launch. If you don't appear at all, check the usual causes in why your website is not showing up on Google.
- Check the renewal price and the exitWrite down what you'll pay in year two and three, and what happens to your site if you leave.
Do it yourself or hand it off
Doing it yourself with an AI builder is fine when the site is a business card, the budget is tight and clients don't find you through search. Spend the saved money on the business, and rewrite the generated copy with real details.
Hand it off when the website is supposed to bring in clients, when competitors outrank you, or when you've spent more weekends fighting the editor than you'd like. Frequently Asked Questions
Is an AI website builder good enough for a small business?
For many small businesses, yes, at least at first. An AI website builder gives you a mobile-friendly site with hosting and SSL for about $3 to $40 a month at the time of writing, which is enough for an online business card. It is less suitable when your clients find you through Google or AI assistants, because the generated copy is generic and you have limited control over speed and structure.
Does Google penalize websites made with AI?
No. Google's guidance says it rewards helpful, original content however it is produced, and using AI isn't against its guidelines. The real risk is that AI builders produce generic text that looks like thousands of other sites, which gives Google no reason to rank yours. Adding real details such as prices, locations, services and answers to common client questions makes the biggest difference.
How much does an AI website builder cost compared to a web designer?
At the time of writing, AI builders cost about $120 for four years on Hostinger's Premium intro deal, and about $640 to $1,070 over three years on Wix Light or Core. A web designer or small team usually charges $1,000 to $10,000 one time for a 4-6 page site, plus small yearly costs for the domain and hosting. At Legacies, a business website starts at 2,199 lei, about EUR 430, with a fixed price.
Can I move my AI-built website to another host later?
Usually not. Sites built on Wix, Squarespace, Framer, Durable and Hostinger's builder stay on that platform, and you can't export them as working code. You can keep your domain and copy your text and images, but the design and structure have to be rebuilt somewhere else. A custom-built site, by contrast, gives you the code, so you can move it anytime.
Which AI website builder is best for SEO?
None of them will rank a site on their own. Wix and Squarespace give you good control over titles, meta descriptions and redirects, and Framer produces clean, fast pages. In practice, the content you write and how fast your pages load matter more than which builder you choose, so test any builder with PageSpeed Insights and rewrite the AI copy with specific details.
Should I use AI to build my website or hire someone?
Use an AI builder if you're testing an idea, your budget is a few hundred dollars and clients mostly come from referrals or social media. Hire someone if search and AI assistants are how people find businesses like yours, if you compete on trust, or if you want to own your site. Many businesses start with a builder and move to a custom site once the business proves itself.
Will ChatGPT recommend a website built with an AI builder?
It can, if the site clearly states what you do, where you work, who you serve and what it costs, and if other sites mention your business. AI assistants cite pages with specific, verifiable facts, not generic marketing text. The builder doesn't matter much. What matters is whether your content answers the questions people ask.
